Having worked for various communities of sizes ranging from a couple hundred to 100,000+, my favorite programs that I have been a part of all stemmed from member recognition.
Rewarding members is rewarding in itself and makes you as a Community Manager feel pretty dang good too. But, given the massive layoffs that we have seen in 2023 and continue to see this year in 2024, making members feel good isn’t quite enough.
So how can we prioritize member recognition, and still show the impact of this that it’s having on the business? Well, we’re about to explore this on this post and dive into measuring and showing impact so that not only are you producing good vibes, but you’re also producing good ROI too.
The why behind recognition
Recognition in a community goes beyond acknowledgment, it helps foster a sense of belonging and appreciation. When we’re able to understand the impact of recognition, the better off we will be at encouraging active participation and sustaining growth.
But first, let’s discuss how we measure it.
Measuring impact
Here are some of the various methods we can employ to assess the influence of recognition on community engagement, member satisfaction, and overall community development.
Surveys & Feedback - Send out surveys to gather feedback and insights from community members. Ask questions about satisfaction levels, perceived value, and the impact of recognition on their overall community experience. Tip: Start collecting this data early on and use it to notice trends. What’s working? What isn’t? Use this to gauge the overall effectiveness of the program.
Quantifiable Metrics - Track the growth of new members and assess the impact on overall community activity. Tip: Find out what metrics matter most to your organization and use this to track the impact of recognition related to those set goals.
Retention - Take a look at member retention over time, and observe any correlation with the implementation of recognition initiatives. Tip: Use a tool like Common Room or Talkbase to tag members based on their participation in a certain program. Then use this to track their retention over time to clearly show the correlation between the two.
Sentiment - Conduct qualitative analysis of community discussions to gauge changes in sentiment and member satisfaction. Tip: Similar to the tip above, use a tool or send out NPS or CSAT surveys to gauge overall satisfaction from members.
Showing impact
Now, let's explore different ways that we can figure out if recognition is making a difference. Understanding the full impact of recognition is a major key to making communities thrive and showing the ROI (return on impact).
Testimonials - The power of member testimonials is a great way to showcase the impact of recognition. When we share success stories and personal narratives from community members who have experienced recognition, we’re able to show the impact that it has made.
Community Health - Utilizing community health metrics provides a comprehensive view of the community's well-being. When we look at and compare the before and after the introduction of recognition initiatives, we can show a detailed picture of how recognition contributes to the community's overall health.
Feedback - Conducting surveys at different intervals allows us to track changes in member perceptions over time. Using this approach is important for showcasing the sustained impact of recognition efforts.
Benchmarking - Another way to show impact is by benchmarking against similar communities that lack recognition programs. This offers a comparative perspective and allows us to understand and show how recognition initiatives uniquely contribute to the community's success.
Improving never ends
One important thing to remember is that recognition isn't a one-time occurrence, it's an ongoing process that requires changes and improvement. A good idea is to regularly assess the impact of recognition initiatives and use these insights gained to continue to refine your recognition strategies.
Tieing it all together
We know that recognition is important and so is being able to measure it. By utilizing a wide range of measurement methods listed above, you will have more tools to showcase and report on the impact of recognition on community engagement, member satisfaction, and overall growth.
